iop_logo.jpgThe Institute of Oriental Philosophy (IOP) is dedicated to advancing scholarly inquiry on Buddhism and other world religions to clarify their universal value and make them a part of humanity's rich spiritual heritage in the modern age. Established in 1962 as a non-profit organization, the IOP conducts independent research on Buddhism--its history, literature and concepts; comparative religion; and the interrelations between religion and science and religion and society. The IOP sponsors original research and a variety of exchanges between Western and Eastern scholars through seminars, symposiums and public lectures, including interfaith dialogues. It has cosponsored special exhibitions of rare Buddhist manuscripts and published Lotus Sutra manuscripts. Its special collections include primary sources in Indian, Chinese and Japanese thought and several language versions of the classic Buddhist canon.
